Who Will Escape?
“For the day of the LORD is at hand…” —Isaiah 13:6
Read Isaiah 13:1-13
Beginning with chapter 13, we read of a number of prophecies that are directed against the nations in general. The first prophecy is one of judgment directed against Babylon, who represented the heathen powers that had resisted God during the biblical era. She is a symbol of arrogance and pride, the builder of the tower of Babel which showed her lack of respect for the Lord.
In the opening verses of our Scripture passage, we read about the assembling of an army, led by the Lord Himself, intended for an attack on the proud world power of Babylon. Notice how Isaiah does not make any distinction between the fall of Babylon and the Day of Judgment – he had not received insight into this as yet.
In the meantime, the Day of Judgment has been clearly displayed with all its horrors. The people will be amazed when they see the wrath of God being poured out: verse 8 says that “their faces shall be as flames,” red from the dreadful scenes they will witness. Who is able to withstand the wrath of God? Only those who call upon the name of the Lord, “they shall be saved” (Joel 2:32).
