What is Crucial?
And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years. Genesis 6:3
Read Genesis 2:18-25; 6:1-4
When we compare the final verses of Genesis 2 with the first few verses of Genesis 6, we are confronted with a remarkable contrast. Do you see the difference between these verses?
In Genesis 2, God’s work in creating woman from the rib of man and bringing her to her husband has the central place. As a result, the Lord receives all the honour. But when we read Genesis 6, God is completely left out of the picture; man’s activities are in the forefront. Man pursues what catches his eye: an attractive face and a nice figure. Consequently, these verses make no reference to mankind living for God’s honour. Males seek to make an impression by their tough masculinity. These young men grow up making a name for themselves because of their power and reputation.
Is there any dissimilarity between our day and age and that of the pre-flood era? When we seek a spouse, do we pray for a woman who fears the Lord? Or do we just look at the outward appearance, having been influenced by all kinds of advertising and modern media? Do you seek a partner with whom you can serve the Lord or are secular considerations more important? You need to take a hard look all around you, including into your own heart. When you do so, do you see that the Lord would be just in destroying us, just as He did in the days of Noah?
Question: How do you go about looking for a spouse?
Psalter 325:3, 4 (based on Psalm 119)
Turn Thou my eyes from vanity, And cause me in Thy ways to tread; O let Thy servant prove Thy word, And thus to godly fear be led. Turn Thou away reproach and fear; Thy righteous judgments I confess; To know Thy precepts I desire, Revive me in Thy righteousness.
