“The Lord will not be mocked”
And the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their houses. —Numbers 16:32
Read Numbers 16:16-35
Korah, Dathan, and Abiram would not accept Moses as their leader. United, they stood together in opposition against him. Remarkably, Korah’s wife and children were not among them; they did not agree with this action.
But then the Lord spoke in a most terrible way. The earth opened up so that a great gap swallowed up the rebels. In the middle of life, they went straight to hell. What horror! The rest of the people ran away from the destruction even as the earth closed its mouth again.
The Lord blessed the children of Korah richly. As we see in the Psalms, they became singers in the temple. They had separated themselves from their father when they saw that he was leading them away from the true service of the Lord. Maybe they had even tried to reason with their father, to no avail. Perhaps they even prayed for him, but nothing changed. There was no other alternative but to forsake their father in his obstinate way. How dreadful!
Let us take sides with the children of Korah, serving the Lord with the knowledge that He will not be mocked.
What can we learn from this redemptive history?
