The Lord’s Answer

The Lord’s Answer

Jesus answered and said unto him, Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these. And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man. John 1:50,51

Read Genesis 28:10-22; Philippians 3:20

Have you ever noticed that when anyone makes a good confession about the Lord they receive further revelation from Him? The Lord speaks to those who live for Him. By His answer to Nathanael He revealed His omniscience; He is all-knowing. No mere human saw Nathanael when he was sitting alone under the fig tree, but, by His answer, the Lord was leading Nathanael to Himself, to the point where Nathanael confessed that the Lord Jesus was the Son of God. That is what distinguishes a true faith from a miraculous or a historical faith.

Do you struggle with the question of whether you are a true child of God or not? Look at the example before us, at Nathanael’s life. Perhaps you say: I do not read anywhere that he confessed that he was a child of God. That’s true! However, you and I will not find such a confession anywhere in the Bible! What kinds of confessions do we read about? We read of many confessions like that of Nathanael in which sinners confess the Lordship of Christ. Take for example the confession of the Ethiopian eunuch of Acts 8:37. Or look at Peter’s confession in Matthew 16:16. In both of them the good confession is made that the Lord Jesus is the Son of God. The Lord’s response to this is, Amen, Amen, meaning that from then on they would live under an open heaven.

Thought: The Lord Jesus is God!

Psalter 232: 1,2 (based on Psalm 85) O Lord, to us Thy mercy show, And Thy salvation now bestow; We wait to hear what God will say; Peace to His people He will speak, And to His saints, but let them seek, No more in folly’s path to stray. His saving help is surely near To those His holy Name that fear; Thus glory dwells in all our land. Now heavenly truth unites with grace, And righteousness and peace embrace, In full accord they ever stand.
