The First Love

“The first love”

Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. —Revelation 2:4

Read Revelation 2:1-7

You may have talked to people who are happily married yet re-flect on the love of their youth in a nostalgic way. They did not end up marrying that boy or girl, yet that first love left its impression. The first experience of love is unforgettable. That is what we also read in the letter to the church of Ephesus. However, this letter deals with the indescribable love of God. This is amazing! The Lord thinks fondly of His children, even those who deserve to be cast away from His presence. He seeks you while you continually turn your back to Him. And when He touches your heart and has dealings with you, then you stand, as it were, on holy ground. What mercy when He points out your sins, declaring that they may be forgiven through the blood of Christ. When the Lord reveals His eternal love for you everything becomes so different. You begin to see everything around you from a heavenly perspective. You will seek to live in peace with all men. Your testimony becomes, “God is love, even if I must die for His truth.”

You would not exchange God’s love for anything else in the world. It is unforgettable when the Lord embraces you with His loving heart. Once you have seen God’s favourable look upon you, you will never want to be without it.

Sometimes you might not enjoy a sense of God’s presence. What then? God is teaching you to live by faith and not by feelings.

What does it mean to leave your first love?
