The Choice of Moses’ Parents

The Choice of Moses’ Parents

By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king’s commandment. Hebrews 11:23

Read Exodus 2:1-10

Moses was born during a difficult time in Israel’s history. Egypt’s Pharaoh had commanded that all baby boys born to the families of Jacob’s descendants were to be put to death, yet some families served the Lord uprightly and defied Pharaoh’s command. A number of Hebrew midwives assisted other Hebrew women when they gave birth; these women chose to obey God instead of fulfilling unlawful human directives. The same choice was also found in the hearts of Moses’ parents.

Great tension must have filled their hearts when the time arrived for their child to be born. Would it be a boy or a girl? It was a boy! According to Pharaoh’s command, this meant that he would be cast into the Nile as food for the crocodiles. However, these parents feared the Lord and did not obey Pharaoh’s orders. In faith, they hid Moses instead. It is a great blessing to have parents who fear God and make decisions based upon His Word. These parents hid Moses because they saw that he was a goodly child. Not only was he a beautiful baby, but these parents also believed the Lord had a special purpose for their son. God did not destine their son to die in the Nile, but to live! In a similar way, God’s purpose for your life (based on His revealed will) is not death, but that you should live!

Thought: What is the meaning of the saying: God seeks your life and not your death?

Psalter 308: 3 (based on Psalm 115) Let Israel trust in God alone, The Lord, Whose grace and power are known; To Him your full allegiance yield; And He will be your help and shield; All those who fear Him God will bless, His saints have proved His faithfulness.
