“Why was I singled out?”
In God my Saviour. —Luke 1:47
Read Luke 1:39-56
Elizabeth and Mary were not haughty women who thought they deserved God’s favour. Rather, we hear Elizabeth say: “Whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” (v.43). And Mary sings: [The Lord] hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden (v.48); and exalted them of low degree (v.52).
This is not the only time the Lord blesses the humble. We cannot be proud, self sufficient, and in need of nothing if we want the Lord to guide and bless us. In the Song of Mary we read: “he hath scattered the proud” (v.51), “he hath put down the mighty from their seats” (v.52), “and the rich he hath sent empty away” (v.53). We must learn to pray, “Lord, open my eyes that I may see things as Thou wouldst have me to see them. Make me to see myself as I really am.”
Mary was also a descendant of Adam. She too was under the same curse as we are. But the Lord allowed His grace to shine very brightly in her life! Do you fear Mary’s God?
What does Mary point us to in verse 50?
