“Open up!”
Behold, I stand at the door, and knock. —Revelation 3:20
Read Revelation 3:20-21
When someone comes to your door they ring your doorbell. Normally you would open the door, and if you are hospitable you would welcome your visitor into your home. The Lord Jesus stands at the door of our hearts and wants to enter our lives. He also said this to the lukewarm Laodiceans. He condemned their lukewarmness but did not leave them to themselves. He does not say as we might be inclined to: “I warned them, so now they can figure it out for themselves.” No. Instead the Lord points out their disease and offers them the medicine they need; they need Jesus, the only remedy. When He lives in our hearts there is no room for half-hardheartedness and lukewarmness. When the Lord Jesus lives on the throne of your heart you have no business listening to the devil who tempts you to sin. Reality is, though, that things are not usually as they should be; we do not give the Lord the most prominent place in our lives. Yet God does not leave us to ourselves. In an incomprehensible way He condescends to have dealings with us. He stands at the door and knocks, calling us to open the door and let Him in. What condescending love! How patient and good the Lord truly is. Will you remain indifferent to the Lord? Will you continue on in your hypocrisy? One day the Lord’s knocking will stop. Then you might begin knocking and pleading that the Lord would open the door, but it will be too late.
He will say: “Go away, for I never knew you.” Today is the day of grace.
How does the Lord knock on people’s hearts?
