No More Night

No More Night

But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation. 1 Thessalonians 5:8

Read 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11

In this section, Paul makes a few remarks about the day of Christ’s return. We do not know when this will occur. The Lord will not come on the evening before His return and say: Tonight is the night that I will break in upon you. The Bible says that this day will come as a thief in the night. The danger exists that a thief will come unexpectedly, without warning and people will not be prepared.

Thankfully we do not continually think of the possibility of thieves, because then we would not dare close our eyes for one second. During the daylight hours, when we are awake, the danger is less intense. Consequently, Paul emphasizes that we must be people of the day. To say it in another way, we must be people of the light. Previously, these people belonged to those who are of the night, those who are in darkness. How beautiful when the light of God awakens you so you are changed into a person of the day and a child of light. Then life in the night of sin, when you were chained in darkness, is past. This also becomes evident in your lifestyle. There are many things that cannot bear the light of the day because they are sinful. Therefore God’s people ought to be lights in this very dark world. When the Lord Jesus returns, the darkness of the night will have passed away forever.

Thought: Have you already been awakened or are you still of the night?

Psalter 94:1,4 (based on Psalm 36) Thy mercy and Thy truth, O Lord, Transcend the lofty sky; Thy judgments are a mighty deep, And as the mountains high. The fountain of eternal life Is found alone with Thee. And in the brightness of Thy light We clearly light shall see.
