Necessary Examples
Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity. 1 Timothy 4:12

Timothy was quite young when he began to serve as a leader in the congregation. Some members may have regarded him as a rather young and inexperienced man who really needed to get a little more life experience before assuming such a position in the church.
Paul however, sought to encourage Timothy. There was no reason for him to remain silent because of his youthful age. At the same time, this encouragement was not designed to give him free course to spout off his own opinion. It was more important to recognize what would be useful for the well being of the church. That is why Timothy was instructed to keep immersing himself in God’s Word, seeking to lead an exemplary life according to it.
This also applies to you and me. It is good for children to be an example to their parents, although this may make them somewhat uneasy. How exemplary when the younger generation of a congregation puts the older generation to shame by their conduct, thereby encouraging them to stand by their principles and put them into practice! In fact, we are always called to be an example to those around us. Your peers will pay closer attention to your lifestyle when they know that you regularly attend church. They will take note of your response to different situations. This should not be a problem. In fact, your example as a Christian may be used by the Lord to draw others to Himself. This does not mean, however, that you should always be giving your opinion on everything.
