By Faith

“By faith…” —Hebrews 11

Read Hebrews 11:17-31

The complete letter to the Hebrews is a summons to its readers. The writer presents Christ to us in His various offices, interspersed with calls to flee to Him in faith. “Today if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts” (Hebrews 3). “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace” (Hebrews 4). “And we desire that every one of you do show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end” (Hebrews 6). The rest of the letter to the He-brews is filled with similar invitations to go to the Lord.

In Chapter 11, we see how Paul pulls out all the stops to convince his readers of how important faith is. He starts by mentioning the creation; we can only understand God’s creation correctly by faith. By faith Noah built the ark. Imagine. For 120 years he worked on the ark. Was he ever filled with doubts concerning his mission? The Bible never mentions any doubts – we are only told that he believed God. By faith, Abraham obeyed God’s call to leave Ur of the Chaldeans. Initially, he did not know God, and yet he went out by faith. Many more examples of faith exist, and the author ends by mentioning a number of them by name in Hebrews 11:32.

Does the list of examples of believer’s in Hebrews 11 convince you to seek the Lord?
