Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread
“Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you…”
—Exodus 16:4
Read Exodus 16:1-21 Two things are important when considering the petition before us. First, there is the prayer for bread. This petition shows us that we must not regard our daily needs as a matter of course. When we look to the Lord in our prayers, He is willing to answer and give what we ask of Him. This petition is such a beautiful one to lay before God. But do we really experience it as such? Or is this petition merely a formality in our prayers? Do we really feel dependent upon the Lord, or do we think that we are quite self-sufficient?
Second, this prayer for bread is basic. Bread is the staple of our existence. We cannot imagine life without bread in some form, and yet bread is a simple, very basic food. This means that we must ask God the Father for the most basic, simple things in life and not for the extras.
Must we pray for bread every day?
