Light in the Darkness
“The people…have seen a great light.” —Isaiah 9:2
Read Isaiah 8:21-9:7
Wherever God is no longer served, darkness will result. The children of Israel experienced this darkness when the world powers set themselves against them. Israel’s darkness was caused by her peoples’ unbelief. The Lord will not share His honour with another, and God’s people had to learn this through sad experience, bringing dishonour and shame upon themselves. As a result, it was too late to reverse their terrible plight. But, was it really hopeless? No, not entirely; our text speaks of light shining in the darkness.
Notice that this light began to shine precisely where the deepest darkness came upon the land, namely, in the heathen area of Galilee. Unbelief and pagan influences had prevailed over this area for many years. But especially in that place, the Lord would cause light to shine, dispelling the darkness. Galilee was despised be-cause of its reputation, but it would receive great honour – the Lord Jesus would grow up, preach, and teach there.
But for whom will the light of our text shine? It will shine upon those who look forward to this light, who experience that their lives are in darkness. Our Scripture passage shows us who that light is, namely, the eternal Son of God.
