The I Am
And God said unto Moses, “I AM THAT I AM.” —Exodus 3:14a
Read Exodus 3:1-14
No doubt you are familiar with the history of Moses, including how the LORD called him to go to the children of Israel. This directive was given him in Midian in a most incredible way: Moses saw a burning bush that was not consumed by the fire. As Moses approached the bush, the LORD rebuked him, saying, “Draw not nigh…for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground” (Ex. 3:5). Moses hid his face, for he knew that no one can see God and live. He knew his sinful heart and feared for his life.
But the Lord continued addressing Moses, saying, “Come now therefore, and I will send thee unto Pharaoh, that thou mayest bring forth my people the children of Israel out of Egypt” (Ex. 3:10).
Moses protested, “Who am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh, and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt?” (Ex. 3:11). He even continues protesting: “Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you: and they shall say to me: What is his name, what shall I say unto them?” And God responds to Moses, “I AM THAT I AM.” This is the meaning of the name Yahweh. He is the faithful one!
