“Is everything lost?”

Mount Sinai is where God gave His law and where He revealed Himself to Moses. Now Elijah stands on this very mountain. Elijah’s name is used quite often in the same breath as that of Moses, since both of these men were zealous for the name of the Lord. Moses gave the law, while Elijah maintained it. The Lord asked the prophet, “What doest thou here, Elijah?” (v.9). When Elijah was asked to reveal what lived in his heart, he burst out with his complaints. He had been very meticulous in fulfilling the Lord’s will, but came to the conclusion that it was a lost case, for all holy things were being despised. Are we inclined to feel the same way about the cultural situation today? A thick, dark cloud had descended on Elijah. He had forgotten about Obadiah and the prophets whom he cared for. The Lord answered Elijah in a manner which left no doubt about the strength of His power. The storm, the earthquake and the fire were all proof of God’s power and might! And yet they were but precursors of what was to come, that the Lord would speak in a still, small voice. Elijah experienced God’s majesty in the storm and the earthquake and the fire, yet the Lord was not in them. He was in that still, small voice.
How can God’s care be discerned in Elijah’s life and yours?
