God’s Surpassing Love

God’s Surpassing Love

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16

Read 1 John 4:7-10

Perhaps you have seen the logo 3:16 on someone’s T-shirt. These numbers are a reference to the words of our text today, John 3:16. This text can be considered as one of the most all-encompassing texts that speaks the message of the gospel. However, sometimes people say: If God is love, why does He allow bad things to happen in the world? Mankind tries to blame God for the wars in the world without considering their own responsibility. In our text the Lord Jesus asks: Do you want to know how much love God actually has for this sinful world? Then you need to look to the Saviour; His coming into the world as God the Father’s Son is evidence of God’s love for sinners like us.

Looking to the Lord Jesus is in reality the same as believing on Him. You can only be saved by exercising faith in Christ the Saviour. This truth is not meant for a select few, but in our text the Lord invites the whole human race to find life in Him. This includes you.

Have you ever stopped to consider who the Lord Jesus spoke these words to? It was Nicodemus, a Pharisee, who had no clue what it meant. Yet the Lord invited him to find life in Himself. Would it then be impossible for you to go to Him?

Thought: When did the Lord first declare His love for you?

Psalter 426:1,4 (based on Psalm 116) I love the Lord, the fount of life and grace; He hears my voice, my cry and supplication, Inclines His ear, gives strength and consolation; In life, in death, my heart will seek His face. The Lord preserves the meek most tenderly; Brought nigh to death, in Him I found salvation. Come, thou my soul, relieved from agitation, Turn to thy rest; the Lord has favored thee.
