God’s Promises

God Remains True to His Promises

And he told her all his heart, and said unto her, There hath not come a razor upon mine head; for I have been a Nazarite unto God from my mother’s womb: if I be shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man. Judges 16:17

Read Judges 16:15-18

Samson succumbed to Delilah’s demands. At last he revealed the secret wherein his extraordinary strength lay. He could not have disclosed his actual identity in any other way than by telling her how he was consecrated by the Lord to a special position. Just as Jonah divulged his real identity to the sailors during a raging storm (Jonah 1:9), Samson could not deny that he was a Nazarite unto God.

Let us not forget that in was the Lord who called Samson to be a Nazarite – not only in respect to his personal life, but also on behalf of God’s covenant people. When children are baptized, receiving the sign and seal of the King of kings, they are not only given this sign as a personal testimony of God’s favour toward them, but this also connects them to the congregation. Think also of how the whole nation was affected when Achan allowed his greed to get the better of him when the city of Jericho was being invaded (Joshua 7:1).

Question: What does it mean to you that the Lord has separated you from the world?

Psalter 389:1, 3 (based on Psalm 143) Lord, hear me in distress, Regard my suppliant cry, And in Thy faithfulness, And righteousness reply. In judgment do not cause; Thy servant to be tried; Before Thy holy laws No man is justified. Recalling former days And all Thy wondrous deeds, The mem’ry of Thy ways To hope and comfort leads. To Thee I stretch my hands, Let me not plead in vain; I wait as weary lands Wait for refreshing rain.
