God’s Law Reveals our Sin

“God’s law reveals our sin”

But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me. —Romans 7:13

Read Romans 7:7-25

When a group of people, usually family, divide an inheritance from a deceased family member, their true character often manifests itself. The appearance of a person’s true nature can be an unpleasant experience.

A similar discovery is found in our Bible passage. Man may think that he lives a decent life until God’s commandments reveal who he really is. The commandments tell us what we should and should not do, and as a result, troubles often arise. You see, by nature you and I want to do the very opposite of what God demands. The Apostle Paul shows us what our true nature is, namely, sinful, adverse, thoughtless, and egocentric. Those of us who are really honest with ourselves will discover that we are challenged and even annoyed by God’s commandments. We think they take away our freedom and forbid those things we like to do or even desire the most.

But isn’t it important to discover who we are? By nature we are slaves to sin and children of the devil, doomed to die. The diagnosis and verdict has been made: doomed to die. Does this resonate with you?

Why was the Law given to us?
