Esther: Clothing and Fashion (3)
And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons. Genesis 3:7

Fashion is a form of communication. Sometimes this can be clearly seen. Just think of Gothic clothing. Some brands very cunningly communicate defiant attitudes. Some young people (sub)consciously dress according to their mood. Just think of a young girl who dresses in dark clothing because she is depressed. Sometimes we consciously dress in a particular way for a specific occasion: for a funeral, we dress soberly; when attending a church service, we put on our Sunday best because the Lord expects that of us. Though we are accustomed to going to church twice each Sunday, this should never just become a matter of routine. Let this also be seen in the clothing you wear, for we are appearing before the King of kings. In church, we confess that we wish to serve Him; this ought to be with all of our life, in an undivided way.
The Bible tells us that what we are internally will show externally in our lives. The Lord looks at us as a single entity. That’s how we have been created and how we are called to serve Him. For this reason, the Lord gives many directives in both the Old and New Testament as to how we are to care for our physical life, including our clothing. Fashion is communication. Whose interests are you promoting? Do your peers see that you want to please the Lord by your wardrobe? Our clothing is one of the means by which we testify what we think of our bodies and our Creator.
Question: How does your clothing reflect your attitude towards God?
Psalter 254:1,3 (based on Psalm 95) O come before the Lord, our King, And in His presence let us sing; Let us in glad and joyful lays The Rock of our salvation praise; Before Him come with thankful song, In joyful psalms His praise prolong. O come and let us worship now, Before our Maker let us bow; We are His sheep and He our God, He feeds our souls in pastures broad; He safely leads us in the way; O come and heed His voice today.
