Darkness or Light
And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God. John 3:19-21
Read John 12:44-50
At the end of his discussion with Nicodemus, the Lord Jesus made a distinction between a true saving faith and an unregenerate man. He did this by comparing light with darkness. The Lord came into the world as the Light of the world. By nature, mankind is so depraved that he tries to avoid the light and remain in his native darkness. When you are exposed to the Lord Jesus’ light, you see how filthy and contaminated with sin you actually are. By nature we want to avoid this reality; we want to continue living in our sin and unbelief.
Thankfully there are individuals who learn to trust in the Lord Jesus. The light of God’s grace has overpowered their dark hearts, and the light of the Lord has gained the victory in their lives. Such people begin to despise the darkness and their sinful ways. Their desire is to live in the light, close to the Lord and His Word; in this way, they too begin to spread light. By God’s grace it can be seen that they have learned to walk with the Lord in His light Yet they also experience times of sorrow because they have allowed the darkness of sin into their lives again. How painful that is! But do not despair, for the day is coming when true believers shall experience perpetual light. The Lord will return on the clouds of heaven and; then all darkness will be gone forever. But whoever refuses to believe in the Saviour will be sent away into everlasting darkness. How terrible! Therefore, by faith, trust the blessed Saviour today, while He is near.
Thought: Do you ever long for the day when you will be forever with the Lord in perfection? Or will you experience eternal darkness?
Psalter 71:1,2 (based on Psalm 27) Jehovah is my light, And my salvation near; Who shall my soul affright, Or cause my heart to fear? While God my strength, my life sustains, Secure from fear my soul remains. When evil-doers came To make my life their prey, They stumbled in their shame And fell in sore dismay; Though hosts make war on every side, Still fearless I in God confide.
