“The Christian’s armour”
I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts. —1 Samuel 17:45
Read 1 Samuel 17:17-47
We all know the story of David and Goliath. Who would not ad-mire David’s courage as he approached this heavily armed giant with a simple slingshot and then defeated him!
In this redemptive history is an example of the hidden spiritual warfare found in the life of a Christian. Isn’t every Christian called to fight a fierce battle against seemingly insurmountable odds? Our enemy is also heavily armed; he is crafty and seeks to attack us at our weakest points.
In all probability, most of the Israelites in the army were not even aware of this spiritual battle. “And the men of Israel said: Have ye seen this man that is come up? surely to defy Israel is he come up” (v.25). But in verse 26, we read David’s response: “For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?” For David, the attacks of Goliath challenged God’s honour, and made him ready to risk his life in God’s defense. Would we be willing and able to do the same thing? David’s armour consisted of his trust in the Lord his God. The Lord will never put anyone to shame whose hope is upon Him!
What is most remarkable concerning David’s attitude?
