Calling

“Calling”

Who hath saved us. —2 Timothy 1:9

Read 2 Timothy 1:3-14

For a few meditations we would like to examine what the Bible has to say about predestination or election. This foundational truth tells us that in eternity, before the world was even made, God decided who would be saved and who would continue on with their evil hearts. This divine decision is hidden from us and remains a divine secret. It is also incomprehensible for us as mere human beings. And although we can never understand God, we are still inclined to try.

The devil knows this about us, and tries to bring many young people to harsh and harmful thoughts about God. As a result, people become careless with the thought, “I can’t do anything about my salvation anyway.” Before we are so dismissive about our salvation, however, we must first listen carefully to what the Lord said through His servant Moses in Deuteronomy 29:29: “The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed be-long unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the works of this law.” And what does God require in His law? We must love God above all else and our neighbour as ourselves. We are all called to obey these two basic commandments. What is our answer then?
