Blind to Jesus
“And anoint thine eyes with eyesalve.” —Revelation 3:18
Read Revelation 3:7-22
In our Scripture reading we have two letters written by John on the island of Patmos, one to the church of Philadelphia and the other to Laodicea. There was such a great difference between these two congregations! Much praise was given to Philadelphia, who were surrounded by many more pagans than other congregations. “Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I will also keep thee from the hour of temptation” (v. 10).
The question we need to ask ourselves is this: Are we blind to the Lord Jesus? The people of Laodicea were blind. It was a miracle that the Lord did not forsake them immediately. He stood at the door of their hearts: “Behold, I stand at the door and knock: If any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me” (v. 20).
Behold, I stand at the door and knock. This is none other than the Lord Jesus Himself who knocks. In verse 18 He also admonishes, “anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.”
The Lord Jesus knows that we are blind; He knows the thoughts of our hearts. But He also has a cure: eye salve. This eye salve will cure our innate blindness. By it you will begin to see your guilt and wretchedness by living without God. But then you will also see God’s eternal love in sending His Son into the world to die so that sinners might be saved. The payment has already been paid in full on Golgotha’s height. Are you still so blind that you do not see this? Pray for the eye salve that only God can give.
