Ask A Pastor: Should Christians Watch Movies?

Question:

Hi, I am just curious to know what our view is, as reformed churches, on going to the movie theatre. I know a verse like “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” 1 John‬ ‭2:15, but what about watching a Christian movie at the theatre, and what are the boundaries/guidelines for this as Christians who are called to be set apart and holy in Christ?

Answer:

Dr. David Murray has a sermon on almost this exact topic, titled, “Should Christians Watch Movies?” (I say “almost” because he doesn’t address movie theatres so much, but rather the overall topic of watching movies. Where we watch doesn’t matter so much as what we watch.) His text is Revelation 18:4, “And I heard another voice from heaven saying, “Come out of her, my people, lest you share in her sins, and lest you receive of her plagues.”
