A Wise King
Then came there two women, that were harlots, unto the king, and stood before him. 1 Kings 3:16
Read 1 Kings 3:16-22
Solomon was a uniquely wise king. Feeling his inadequacy to rule, he had prayed for wisdom and an understanding heart. Only in this way would he be equipped to rule the nation of Israel. With wisdom from above, he would be able to discern between good and evil. In answer to his prayer, the Lord gave him a wise and discerning heart. Solomon was given insight into the law of the Lord, which God had given to His people. God’s law guided the king in pronouncing judgments and making decisions.
This should be true also today. But alas, many laws in our land are not in keeping with the law of God. Whoever is employed as a social worker is regularly confronted with this. Ethical matters such as abortion and euthanasia are often laid aside. Moreover, this is becoming truer in every facet of our lives. Much wisdom is needed to deal in an upright and proper way. A wise heart seeks to live, think and speak in a manner pleasing to God. Do you condemn abortion and euthanasia only because the Bible does so or because this is the conviction of your heart? In whatever situation we find ourselves, we need a wise heart. Such a heart seeks light and wisdom from above, that it might know the will of the Lord. It is foolish to remain silent when we ought to speak up, and it is wise to speak up when God’s law is transgressed. It is especially wise to live according to all of God’s commandments.
Thought: A wise heart is indispensable.
Psalter 304:4,7 (based on Psalm 111) God’s promise shall forever stand, He cares for those who trust His word; Upon His saints His mighty hand The wealth of nations has conferred. In reverence and in godly fear Man finds the gate to wisdom’s ways; The wise, His holy Name revere; Through endless ages sound His praise.
