A series where we shed light on common questions of the Christian faith. Today we're asking Pastor Aaron Van der Heiden why the bible can appear to be offensive. This is Faith to Film. So a lot of people will reject the bible because they consider its content offensive. More specifically people bristle at the biblical expressions of God's wrath and anger. They'll say that they will willingly embrace the loving God of the New Testament, but they reject the merciless angry God of the Old Testament. But ingrained in this is a misunderstanding of God's justice. God's justice is never arbitrary, it's never random, it always exists and comes in the context of human rebellion and sin. In addition, to pit two testaments against each other is somewhat ironic and this irony is seen in the cross itself. The new testament cross is the most violent expression of god's wrath. The only innocent one willingly submitting himself to the wrath of God after taking on the sins of the world by imputation and yet without this act of wrath there is no grace and in fact it is this act of wrath that makes grace possible. Further, the old testament God is actually a God of patience and endurance. While the Old Testament laws may seem to be incredibly bloodthirsty, if we put them against the backdrop of the law of creation, we actually find that they're saturated with grace because the law of creation says that an act of sin is a cosmic offense. Any iniquity, any sin, any transgression committed against a God who is holy, righteous, and good is deserving of death and so what we see then in the Old Testament laws is actually a massive reduction in the amount of capital crimes. Showing that God is in fact not a God of vengeance and anger but a God of compassion and love and so if we have an issue with the bible's content being offensive perhaps the issue is with our own distorted view and sense of values and not with God himself. • About Us | Plants and Pillars

All About Us “That our sons may be as plants grown up in their youth; that our daughters may be as corner stones, polished after the similitude of a palace” (KJV) “That our sons may be as plants grown up in their youth; That our daughters may be as pillars, sculptured in palace style” (NKJV) This verse (and our name) is a prayer, a wish, a desire that God may bless us so that our sons and daughters—our young people—may grow up, not only healthy, but thriving, flourishing, strong, and beautiful. Physically, but most especially spiritually. This Psalm lets us know that this doesn’t happen automatically or by our own effort. Psalm 144 is a Psalm about God as a warrior God, who protects, delivers, and shields us (verses 1-2), and who defeats our enemies for us (verses 5-11). The Bible elsewhere describes our greatest enemies: Sin (in us, and in the world), death, and the devil. And this Psalm is an admission—also a declaration—that we ultimately need God to fight this fight for us (see also verses 3-4, about how strong we are). The turning point in this Psalm is verse 12, where the Psalm writer is convinced that if God does fight and defeat our spiritual enemies for us, then we will be blessed in our lives. And then he lists the blessings (verses 12-15). And yes, these are physical blessings—but ultimately they are spiritual blessings. And these blessings begin with the verse from which we get our name, Plants & Pillars (verse 12). Our prayer is that God will use this project to help you grow—our sons as plants fully grown, and our daughters as corner pillars, made for a palace. But this prayer depends on God fighting for us. And so the content found here will point you to our Triune God—Father, Son and Holy Spirit—who together do the work of salvation for us and in us, centering on the cross of Jesus Christ. It will point you to yourself, and describe you as the Bible describes you, to help you see your need for God, and your need to be born again. And it will help you make sense of the things you experience in this world—especially in sin and salvation. And so every article, every video, every Bible Study will be posted with this prayer: That God bless the youth of our churches and make them as Plants & Pillars. We hope you visit often! the Plants & Pillars team Team Members Gerrit Sinke Director Pastor Kenneth Hutton Editor Scott deKorte Video and Social Media Pastor Mark Wagenaar Editor Erin van Oort Website Manager Contact Us First Name Last Name Email Phone Message Submit Thanks for submitting!
