Much Fruit

“Much fruit”

“Woman, behold thy son.” —John 19:26

Read John 19:17-27

The King of the Jews was crucified. He who had said “I am the resurrection and the life” hung dying upon the cross. But we must look at the scene before us beyond what we see at first glance. For Christ Himself said, “Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit” (John 12:24). Yes, Christ’s death would bear much fruit, but while He was dying, He thought of his mother Mary’s circumstances. He said, “Woman, behold thy son.” Even in death He perfectly obeyed the fifth commandment by honouring His mother. One fruit of Christ’s suffering is that He makes us willing to obey His commands. He kept the law perfectly to forgive our transgressions of the law, also of the fifth commandment.
