Longings
“For the LORD God is a sun and shield…” —Psalm 84:11
Read Psalm 84
In this Psalm we read about the Psalmist’s desire to go to the house of God: “My soul longeth for the courts of the Lord.” The poet would rather dwell in God’s house, or church, than in an ungodly place. In church we can hear what the Lord has to say to us. It is in church that spiritual food is presented to hungry people. It is there that the call to repent also resounds. In God’s house we are invited to sing to His honour. We can also sing the prayer that the Lord would be our Sun and Shield, for as the Son of Righteousness He wants to penetrate our dark and sinful hearts. The miracle of God’s grace is that He is willing to give us true joy.
The Lord is also willing to be our Sun and Shield to keep us safe and to ward off the attacks of the devil. The ultimate, life or death question is, “Do you know this Sun and Shield?”
Why is the last thought mentioned so important?
