And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as thou comes unto Zoar. Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and they separated themselves the one from the other. Genesis 13:10, 11

In reading about Lot, the nephew of Abram, we come across some admirable qualities. He also left his family and went with Abram from Haran to the Promised Land. He did not remain behind in Egypt when Abram returned to the land of promise. When he lived in Sodom, he vexed his soul on account of the ungodly and wicked lifestyles of its citizens. He did not feel at home there. The New Testament tells us that the righteous are scarcely saved (1 Peter 4:18). How terrible, however, was the end of his family. His wife became a pillar of salt in the judgment that came on Sodom and Gomorrah. His daughters lived and acted sinfully according to the inhabitants of these cities, and their descendants produced the nations of Ammon and Moab. The majority of them remained outside of the covenant people of God. This was Lot’s fault, for he went to live in the area that he saw was well watered; the plains around Sodom and Gomorrah looked like a paradise. But he did not see the judgment that hung over this apparent paradise due to its ungodly citizens.
Lot is a warning for us. He pursued the lusts of his eyes and made a wrong choice. This world will pass away, along with all that is desirable in it. But those who fulfill the will of God will live forever. Abram knew better; he carried the compass of God’s Word.
Thought: We are called to make many choices in our life. Do we seek God’s counsel for them?
Psalter 385:1, 3 (based on Psalm 140) Deliver me from evil, Preserve me, Lord, from wrong; Against the foes that gather Be Thou my helper strong. From those who plot to hurt me And spread their treacherous snare Preserve me Lord, and keep me Safe guarded in Thy care. Let evil smite the evil And cause their overthrow; The needy and the afflicted The Lord will help, I know; Thy saints, redeemed from evil, Their thanks to Thee shall give; The righteous and the upright, Shall in Thy presence live.
