False Adornment
Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair. 1 Peter 3:3
Read 1 Peter 3:1-7
Women have been given a special place by God. This will also be seen in the way they conduct themselves. In his letter, the Apostle Peter points out that the Christian woman is called to walk in the fear of the Lord. Her walk of life needs to be purified through the power of God’s Word and His Spirit. A truly Christian wife adorns herself with the purpose God has given her in this life, through the quickening and renewing power of God’s Spirit.
This differs drastically from that of worldly women whose lives circle around outward appearances. Many women seek to entice men in this way! Is that also true of you? How do you try to gain the attention of men? Do you do so through your hairstyle, by wearing seductive clothing, through your figure or by wearing expensive jewelry? If any of these things are your adornment, then you are to be pitied, because outward beauty perishes.
The inner man, however, is lasting. There is not a woman more beautiful than one whose adornment is the fear of the Lord. Can the following characteristics be found in your life: the fear of the Lord, a life of communion with God, and a life that depends on the precious blood of Christ? The woman who has been won over by the Lord wears the lasting adornment of the fear of the Lord. What does your adornment consist of?
Thought: Women who depend only on outward appearance are not truly attractive.
Psalter 271:1,2 (based on Psalm 101) Of mercy and of justice My thankful song shall be; O Lord, in joyful praises My song shall rise to Thee. Within my house I purpose To walk in wisdom’s way; O Lord, I need Thy presence; How long wilt Thou delay? On what is base and evil I will not set my heart; Transgressor’s ways abhorring, With them I take no part. No froward man or evil Shall my companion be; I will not suffer slander, Or pride or treachery.
