Farewell
“He was … carried up into heaven…” —Luke 24:51
Read Luke 24:36-53
After the Lord Jesus’ resurrection, He made Himself known unto His disciples. He taught them that in His suffering, death, and resurrection God’s Word had been fulfilled.
He opened their understanding so that they would comprehend the Scriptures (Luke 24:45). The disciples then received the call to go into all the world with the promise that they would receive the Holy Spirit. On the Mount of Olives, the Lord laid His hands on them and blessed them. In verse 51 we read, “And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and was carried up into heaven.”
The Lord Jesus had said His farewell. The disciples witnessed His ascension in order that they would not doubt this step of salvation history. Soon the Holy Spirit would come down, for Christ had said, “He shall glorify me; for he shall receive of mine, and shall show it unto you” (John 16:14).
What is the main task of the Holy Spirit for us today?
